Public Involvement

The Draft EIS/LEIS is now available. The public review period began with the release of the Draft EIS/LEIS and the publication of the Notice of Availability (NOA) on August 10, 2012, and ended on November 8, 2012. During this time, the Navy invited the public to review and comment on the Draft EIS/LEIS in preparation of a Final EIS/LEIS. Public open houses for the Draft EIS/LEIS were held during the public review period in Ridgecrest (October 2, 2013), Trona (October 3, 2013), and Lone Pine (October 4, 2013).

Information materials provided at the public open houses:

The public involvement program for this EIS/LEIS began with the publication of the Notice of Intent. The NOI briefly describes the Department of the Navy (DoN)’s proposed actions and announced the public scoping meetings. The public scoping (information gathering) meetings were held in Ridgecrest, Lone Pine, and Trona in July 2011. The intent of these meetings was to:

1. Inform the public of the proposed actions and alternatives
2. Seek input from the public regarding any concerns or issues related to the proposed actions and alternatives

Announcements were made in the local newspapers to notify the public about the meetings. The comments received during these meetings were used to identify the significant issues to be analyzed in the EIS/LEIS, identify and eliminate issues that will not be significant or those that have been adequately covered in prior environmental review documents, identify gaps in data and informational needs, and identify other environmental review and consultation requirements integrated with the EIS/LEIS process.

Re-Opened Public Comment Period

The Navy re-opened the public comment period from January 11, 2013 to February 11, 2013. During this time, the Draft EIS/LEIS and additional key references have been made available.
